What helps a candle burn safely and evenly?

Why does the first burn matter?
During the first burn, the candle begins forming its initial melt pattern. As the flame warms the wax, a pool of liquid wax develops around the wick.
Allowing that melt pool to expand gradually toward the sides of the vessel can help reduce a deep ring of unmelted wax around the edges.
This does not mean every candle must reach the exact edge during its first hour. Candle diameter, wax type, wick size and room temperature all affect how quickly the melt pool develops.
What is a melt pool?
The melt pool is the layer of liquid wax surrounding the wick while the candle burns.
Its width shows how far heat has traveled across the surface. Its depth shows how much wax has become liquid beneath the flame.
A melt pool naturally becomes wider and deeper as the candle continues burning.
How long should the first burn last?
There is no single burn time that fits every candle. A wider candle usually needs more time to develop a broad melt pool than a narrow candle.
Always follow the care instructions supplied with the candle and never exceed the recommended maximum burn time.
The goal is not to force the candle to melt rapidly. It is to allow the wax to warm gradually while the candle remains under supervision.
Does the wax need to reach the edge every time?
Not necessarily. A candle may leave a small amount of wax near the edge during an early burn and still perform normally later.
As the candle burns lower, heat may become more contained inside the vessel. This can help soften wax that remained near the upper edge.
A narrow edge of unmelted wax is different from a deep tunnel that continues downward through the center of the candle.
What happens if I extinguish the candle too soon?
A single short burn does not automatically ruin a candle. However, repeated short burns can create a narrow melt pattern through the center.
As that pattern becomes deeper, a wall of unmelted wax may remain around the sides. This is commonly called tunneling.

Can I leave the room while the first burn finishes?

Does mushrooming mean the candle is defective?

Why does my wick curl while it burns?

Why is the wick leaning to one side?

Why will my trimmed wick not stay lit?

Can I scrape wax from the sides into the melt pool?

Why does the wax look rough after the candle cools?

How far should candles stay from children and pets?

Can I burn every last drop of wax?
No.
A small amount of wax is intentionally left in the vessel to reduce heat against the bottom of the glass.

Can I reuse an empty candle jar?
